Jon Schmidt is having a contest. Jackson posted a youtube video of himself playing Road Trip (a Jon Schmidt song) and if he gets the most views, he wins $100 and tickets to a Jon Schmidt concert. The contest started at the beginning of summer and ends Setpember 30th. Jackson just barely posted his video, so he only has 30 days to get views. So view as many times as you want to!

Jackson and Justin Playing the Piano

Jackson and Justin have been working hard and practicing the piano, so I just wanted to post their new songs. We are doing great, I just can't find the time to keep the blog updated, but I am going to try... I still enjoy reading all our family and friend's blogs.

Static Electricity

We took these funny pictures of Savannah while she was on the trampoline. Her hair was full of static electricity and if we held out a finger, she would come shock us, until a couple of the shocks were so big that it hurt her and then she refused to come near any of us!

I remembered I also had this picture of Jared on the trampoline, but short hair just doesn't get as wild!

Rubik's Cube

Jackson and Justin accomplished something this week that Jason and I were never able to do as kids (or as adults for that matter). They solved the Rubik's Cube!

As you can see in the picture, Jackson now wear's a white shirt and tie to church every week because he is a Deacon and gets to pass the sacrament. I can't believe my little boy is 12 years old!

I'm also posting pictures of Savannah at nap time and bath time. I love my babies when they are sound asleep, especially when they still let you hold and cuddle them.

Jared Singing (Or Not)

This is Jared's preschool Christmas program. He can be very stubborn when he makes up his mind. On the way to the program, he told me he was only going to sing one of the songs and that he wouldn't sing the other song. That is exactly what he did! He sang Jingle Bells louder than any of the other kids (even if he is a little behind on the chorus), and then he refused to sing Santa Claus is Coming to Town. He just stands there the entire song. I've been wondering if it's maybe because I sang that song the week before Christmas whenever the kids were being bad. He is the only boy in a preschool class of 5 girls, I guess some things are just too girly for him!

Savannah's First Word

This is Savannah's first word (besides babbling and saying Mama and Dada). We watch Diego's Dinosaur Rescue every morning in the car when we are taking kids to school (just ask the Callaways!), so that is how she learned to say Diego. We love how she makes an O with her lips! Sorry for being the annoying mom on the other side of the video camara... what we do to capture our kids doing cute things on video.

Halloween Weekend

We had a fun Halloween Weekend! We flew to Utah on Friday morning. We went straight to the flying field and Jackson got to fly Grandpa Stueck's new remote control airplane. Later that night we went trick or treating with cousins.

On Saturday, we went to ShayLeigh and Katelyn's baptisms. We then flew to California and went to Disneyland and California Adventure on Monday and Tuesday. Here are some of our favorite pictures (Jared was scared of Minnie Mouse!):

This is a cute video of Savannah giving her dad kisses and Jackson and Jason riding the Maliboomer (they were the only ones tall enough and brave enough to ride this ride!) There must be something wrong if each seat on the ride has a puke shield.

Autumn Time

Savannah's hair is growing fast and I finally figured out how to put a bow in her hair. Savannah also has a birth mark on her face. We think it is kind of cute; hopefully she won't hate it when she grows older.

This is our scary spider and spider web we put up for Halloween. Now everyone who comes to our door has to walk down the spooky tunnel!

I forgot to post Joshua's birthday pictures. He turned 6 years old on August 19th. He had a really fun party with lots of friends at Chuck E. Cheese. Joshua graduated from two preschool's this spring, Ms. Jamie's preschool and Ms. Sandee's preschool.

I also had to post these pictures of Joshua's elbow. It isn't broken, but can you believe how big that hematoma is? He had an accident on his scooter. Luckily he was wearing his helmet.

Jackson is going to tell a story about scout camp: This summer I went to Boy Scout Camp. Our boy scout leaders (including my dad) warned us several times that there had been bear sightings close to our camp. One night we went for a walk with night vision goggles to look at deer. It was pitch black outside. After we had been walking for a while, Brother Nelson stopped to tie his shoe and never caught back up with us. A couple minutes later we heard a grunting noise in the meadow. We were looking through the night vision goggles and saw a big black creature waving its long arms around. We were scared to death! We thought it was a grizzly bear. Then the creature started crawling on the trail. My friend said he was so scared he was going to pee his pants! We couldn't see any grizzly bear cubs, so then we thought the creature wasn't a bear. The creature picked up a big log and threw it towards us. Soon after, my friend Garrett recognized his dad dressed up in a Sasquatch costume. We had been punked! I have never been so scared in my life!

1st Day of School 2008

Jackson started 6th Grade in Middle School. Justin started 3rd Grade. Josh started Kindergarten. And Jared is starting Pre-School. Savannah learned to walk during the first week of school. The boys are so proud of her!

Jackson's Model Airplanes

Jackson spent a week in June visiting Grandma and Grandpa Stueck in Utah. He spent most of the week building and flying radio control model airplanes with Grandpa. On Saturday, June 14th, Jackson got the chance to fly one of Grandpa's airplanes at the Utah Valley Aeromodelers show and he made the front page of the Pony Express newspaper! He was the youngest pilot at the air show and he did a great job. If you can't read the small print, here is an excerpt from the newspaper article: "Just ask Jackson Downey, an 11-year-old from Las Vegas who comes to Utah to fly with is grandfather. "It does take a while to learn. I started on a computer program, and then buddy-boxed. It's fun."

Family Trip July 2008: Yosemite

We spent the last two days of our family trip hiking in Yosemite (Jason, Jackson, and Josh even did one hike in the rain). We saw several beautiful waterfalls and Jason enjoyed seeing Half Dome (which he hiked to the top of as a teenager). All Josh wanted to do was see a bear, and on our very last day... we finally we saw a bear! Josh rolled off the hotel bed in the middle of the last night of our trip and cut open his chin/lip on the bedside table. We rushed home and got it glued together. We had a wonderful time and made many fun memories!

Family Trip July 2008: Family Reunion

We met up with our family on the third day of our trip. We stayed in some really nice condos in Windsor, California for six days. We had such a wonderful time with Jason's side of the family. All of Jason's 7 brothers and sisters are married now and with 21 grandkids and Grandma and Grandpa, there were 39 people. Some of the activities for the week included a hike and picnic in the Redwood forest, driving to the the Northern California coast, touring a winery, golfing, visiting the farmer's market, an outdoor movie on the town green, swimming in the pool every day (and sometimes twice a day), driving into San Francisco, taking a boat to Alcatraz, and visiting the Aquarium. Most of all, the kids enjoyed playing with their cousins and we all enjoyed spending time with family.

Family Trip July 2008: Carson City

We spent the second day of our vacation in Carson City. We went on a fun train ride, toured Virginia City, swam in the pool, and went to a carnival. Jackson loved this spider car and wanted a picture. I also included these pictures of Savannah in the back pack. She spent a lot of the trip on our backs! She was such a good baby on the trip and enjoyed being around lots of family.

Family Trip July 2008: Lake Tahoe

The first day of our family trip was spent driving to Carson City and Lake Tahoe. The kids enjoyed playing (and getting dirty) on the beach at Lake Tahoe while we waited for the 4th of July Fireworks. Jason and I agree it was the most spectacular display of fireworks we have ever seen!

Savannah Is Crawling!

Savannah started crawling last night (she is 9 1/2 months old). Everyone is so excited, but I know how much work crawling babies are! She is also our vampire baby. She got her two bottom middle teeth, and then her two top lateral incisors (you'll have to look close to see her vampire teeth).

Savannah has been the hardest baby to feed baby food. She does not like it! We have to wait until she wails and then hurry and stick the spoon in her mouth. We put on quite the circus act every night to try to get her to eat!

Moms and Muffins/Dads and Cakes

Just wanted to post a video of Jackson's performance at Moms and Muffins at school on Friday. It was a piano/flute duet that he played with his 5th grade teacher, Miss Witt. Jackson has had a wonderful 5th grade year and keeps telling me that he doesn't want it to end (he only has 7 days left). We are grateful for his amazing teachers that made his year great!

Justin had a Father/Son Cake Bake Contest at Cub Scouts last Wednesday. Jason helped him make this sand castle cake (mom didn't help at all!). The sand was actually crushed vanilla wafers. I was very impressed. The only award Justin was trying to win was "The Tallest Cake." He was very exctied when he came home with the award for "Tallest Cake!"

Missoula Children's Theatre

Last week was our school's Missoula Children's Theatre musical production of The Amazing Adventure of Robinson Crusoe. The PTA sponsors this week long event and I am the committee chair, so it is a busy week. We were able to cast 64 kids in the play. My mom and dad and Riley came down from Utah to help. Jackson had one of the main roles as "Thursday" and Justin was a member of the "Very Hairy, Frownie-Face Tribe". Mom and I made flower cookies on a stick to help raise funds. We had a fun time and Jared still walks around the house singing the "Boom Bada Boom" song from the play (it's driving us crazy!).

Other musical happenings... Jackson and Justin had a piano recital and festival at UNLV. They both received superior ratings and Justin also got a special honors medal. Jackson is playing the piano and accompanying his 5th grade teacher, Miss Witt, (who plays the flute) at our Moms and Muffins program this Friday. Anyone reading the church news might have seen this picture (it took me several glances to realize that was my husband in the background!) It was an article about the Faith in God program and Jason and Jackson attended a special fire side President Thomas S. Monson gave for the boyscouts in 2006. You can barely see Jackson's hair in the picture.

Father and Son Camp Out

On the weekend of April 25th-26th, Jason took the boys to the annual Father and Son Camp Out (actually, he just took Jackson, Justin, and Jared; Josh did not want to miss his soccer game; he was emphatic that his team needed him!) Our ward decided to give the kids a real "cowboy" experience, so they camped the night in a cow pasture in Ashsprings, NV. The next morning, fathers and sons helped brand and castrate the poor, unsuspecting little calves.

Recent Travels

Our minivan reached 100,000 miles today! We love our minivan and it has taken us on many fun and memorable trips. We traveled to Utah on the weekend of April 5th-6th for General Conference and Jason's mission reunion. Jason, Jackson, and Justin rode the train to temple square and got to attend the Sunday afternoon session of General Conference. Jason sat with his mission companion, Guido Uchtdorf, whose father was sustained to the first presidency.

I also got to visit my Grandpa Wallace Prestwich for the last time. He passed away the day after our visit, so I was grateful for the opportunity to say goodbye to him. Grandpa Prestwich was the best Grandpa in the world and I will miss him.

On the weekend of April 19th-20th, we traveled to San Diego to drop Jackson off at Sea Camp. We arrived a day early so the whole family could go to Sea World. One of the highlights of the trip was dining with Shamu:

After the ride, he told me, "that was painful." I'm not sure what he meant because he was begging to go on it again as soon as we got off.

Iron Girl Triathlon

We did it! Last Saturday was the Iron Girl Triathlon at Lake Las Vegas that I have been training for. It was so much fun! Although the open water swim was hard for me, I had a lot of fun biking and running. The whole atmosphere was fun and if I can do it, anyone can! Here are some pictures.

I have always been scared of the water and never swam more than the doggie paddle until January. I need to thank Jason for teaching me to swim and being patient when I didn't even want to put my face in the water. I have the best husband in the world! Easter Egg Hunt

We had a really fun Easter Egg Hunt out at Darlene and Chyler's neighborhood. There were lots of family in town for Lissa's wedding and baby Carson's blessing. Savannah is sitting up on her own and she is very proud of herself!

Here is a picture of some of the girls I am doing the sprint triathlon with. Most of us have had a baby in the past year. This is the first time I have ever "clipped in" to ride a bike. We rode the triathlon course at Lake Las Vegas and the next week we rode the Red Rock Loop. Go Momma Go!

Pancake Prince, Rolling Over, and More...

Josh had a pancake eating contest at preschool and he ate more pancakes than anyone, so he was crowned the Pancake Prince. He was so excited! He wears his crown all the time and tells people he won 1st Place.

Josh also had to perform a talent at preschool and decided he would balance a quarter on each finger. He came up with this talent all by himself!

Savannah's new talent is to roll over. She is growing up way too fast!

Talking about talents, Jared (our 3 year old) is amazing at Donkey Kong on the Wii. He plays on the expert level and can beat all of us!

Jackson is playing a piano solo at the Relief Society birthday dinner on Tuesday. Jackson and Justin were in a children's choir that sang at Stake Conference last month. Justin got to sing a solo (the first verse of I am a Child of God) in front of all those people and did a great job! Jackson and Justin are taking Musicianship tests at UNLV on Saturday. Wish them luck!

I had to post a picture of my birthday cake (I keep getting older each year!). No... it's not from Jason, it's from my wonderful visiting teachers. But Jason got me a pair of cycling shoes to help me with the Irongirl sprint Triathlon I am doing at Lake Las Vegas next month. He has been very supportive these past couple of months while I have been training.

Jackson's Pachabel and Trampoline Tricks

I made a deal with Jackson... if he would let me video him playing the piano, I would also video him doing a front flip 180 into a back flip on the trampoline. So, here is a video of Jackson playing his new song "Pachabel Meets U2" by Jon Schmidt and hang on until the end to see the boys' cool trampoline tricks!

Remember to pause our playlist so you can hear the piano. Too bad I couldn't pause Savannah calling for attention in the background... I don't know how Jackson keeps his concentration! This is my Grandma Stueck's 1923 Steinway piano that was just overhauled and re-strung. It was gone for 3 months up to Utah, and we are grateful to have it back.

President Gordon B. Hinckley

We were saddened by the news Sunday night that President Gordon B. Hinckley had passed away (he was 97). Our family loved President Hinckley and we will miss him. We looked forward to General Conference when we could hear our prophet speak. We loved his humor and eloquence; he always made me want to work hard and be a better person. President Hinckley has been the prophet for 12 years, the only prophet in Jackson's and Justin's life time, so I asked them what they remembered about him.

Justin remembers when we wrote a special verse of the song Follow the Prophet for President Hinckley, it went:
Now we have a prophet who listens to the Lord,
His Book of Mormon Challenge said read every word,
Building many temples, the most in history,
Gordon B. Hinckley knows the Way to Be!

Jackson remembers giving a Primary talk the week after General Conference in April of 2007 and he bore his testimony that he knew President Hinckley was a true prophet.

This is President Hinckley's testimony:
"I hope that all of you will remember that on this Sabbath day you heard me bear my witness that this is God's holy work. The vision given the Prophet Joseph in the grove of Palmyra was not an imaginary thing. It was real. It occurred in the broad light of day. Both the Father and the Son spoke to the boy. He saw Them standing in the air above him. He heard Their voices. He gave heed to Their instruction.

"It was the resurrected Lord who was introduced by His Father, the great God of the universe. For the first time in recorded history, both the Father and the Son appeared together to part the curtains and open this, the last and final dispensation, the dispensation of the fullness of times.

"The Book of Mormon is all that it purports to be—a work recorded by prophets who lived anciently and whose words have come forth "to the convincing of the Jew and Gentile that Jesus is the Christ, the Eternal God, manifesting himself unto all nations" (Book of Mormon title page).

2008 Pinewood Derby

The Cub Scout Pinewood Derby was last Wednesday. Justin won first place and his best friend Tommy won second place. Jason helped a boy in our ward (Jaime) make his car, and he won third place. I guess by the 4th Pinewood Derby, Jason has learned how to make a fast car! We have eight more Pinewood Derby cars to make before all our boys will be done with Cub Scouts!

Savannah Loves to Sing

Savannah is 5 months old and she loves to sing and croon. I caught her doing it with the video camera today. She comes with me to singing time and loves to lay by the piano and sing along with the primary kids. She also loves to suck on her toes now that she is strong enough to get them to her mouth. She is a lovable baby!

Jared's Update

Jared turned 3 years old today! Finally... it seems like Jared has been three for the past year. We took the family bowling for Jared's birthday party and the kids had a blast! Unfortunately, real bowling is a lot harder than bowling on the Wii. We had a Wii bowling tournament for Family Home Evening and Josh beat everyone by scoring a 190 (he didn't do quite so well at the bowling ally).

Jason and I went to parent teacher conferences for Jackson and Justin on Thursday. They are doing great! We are grateful for their wonderful teachers who are interested in helping them succeed and excel in school.

Justin is working on his Pinewood Derby car, Jason has decided to build one too... Boys will be boys! We'll let you know how it goes next week.

I have been the primary chorister in our ward for almost 4 years (I finished my fourth primary sacrament meeting program in October). I love my calling, I love music, and I love primary kids. Too bad I can't sing... There is a fun website that has great ideas for primary and Young Women called www.sugardoodle.net if any of you need ideas. I put away our nativity costumes for the year (31 angel costumes, 21 shepherd costumes, 3 wisemen costumes, Mary, and Joseph). I made these costumes four years ago and they have been used by the primary for sharing times and Ward Christmas parties every year. I still enjoy taking pictures, here is our 3 year old Jared!

Justin's Update

I've been waiting to do Justin's update until I could tell you about his baptism. Justin was baptized on Saturday, January 5th, 2008. It was a very special day with lots of family in town. Justin was baptized and confirmed by his dad. Jason and Justin also sang a special musical number "When I Am Baptized." It was so neat to see father and son (both dressed in their white jumpsuits) singing together. We had a big luncheon afterwards and Justin enjoyed playing with his cousins. We appreciate the love and support of all our family and friends who came to support Justin. We are so proud of him!

I have to share a funny comment Joshua made to our bishop (Bishop Fife) at the baptism. The bishop was discussing the 4th article of faith that talks about the first principles and ordinances of the gospel. He asked the kids what an ordinance was. Josh promptly raised his hand and told the bishop they were round things that you hang on your Christmas tree to decorate it. He was so genuine and innocent we all started laughing. Ornaments and ordinance do sound alike....

Joshua's Update

Josh is 5 years old and is a little accident prone. He is very social and likes to talk to everyone. If he doesn't have anything to say, he'll start a conversation by going up to someone and saying, "I'm five years old." A few weeks ago I got a call from his preschool teacher saying Josh had cut the back of his head open and he needed stitches. Apparently, he was playing London Bridges Falling Down wearing high heel shoes (Ms. Jamie said all the boys wanted to try out the high heel shoes; Jason asked her not to let him wear them anymore). Luckily, our old home teacher is a plastic surgeon and we went straight to his office to get stitches. The cut was all the way to his skull and Josh got several layers of stitches. This isn't the first trip we've made to see Dr. Rodriguez. Last year Josh got a staple in his head while laying on Dr. Rodriguez kitchen table.

We started Josh on growth hormones about 4 months ago. He gets a shot every night before he goes to bed. It is just a shot under the skin, not into the muscle, so Josh doesn't mind the shots. We are always grateful when we go to our yearly trip to the pediatric cardiologist and find out that Josh's heart is doing well and he doesn't need another surgery. Josh's eyes are also seeing well and hopefully he won't need a 3rd eye surgery. He is a lovable kid and is still in love with a little girl named Megan, who is two years older and a lot taller than Josh.

Jackson's Update

Ok, my first post was too fun and too easy and Savannah is still cooperating, so I'll post again. I will give an update on the kids, starting with Jackson. Last week Jackson received his Arrow of Light at Cub Scouts Pack Meeting and had his crossing over ceremony to 11-year old Scouts. We are very proud of him, but I will always remember the ceremony because Jackson was chomping on gum the whole time. Jackson also graduated from DARE (drug abuse resistance education) at school. He is in 5th grade this year and is the Student Council President, so he had to open the graduation ceremony and introduce the DARE police officer. I made a deal to pay him $10 if he would memorize his speech. Bribery worked this time and Jackson did a great job!

Jason took Jackson and Justin to the Las Vegas Bowl on Dec. 22nd. BYU vs. UCLA. Grandpa Downey was in town to go and our friends from UCLA, Mark Crane and his son Joshua, flew in from Colorado to see the game. It was a fun game and BYU won by blocking UCLA's field goal in the last three seconds. Jason watched the game again last night on the DVR, I guess he was afraid he missed something the first time. At least he fast forwarded inbetween the plays!

Jackson is learning a Jon Schmidt song on the piano (Pachabel Meets U2). Our family loves his piano music, and I love him for inspiring little boys to practice the piano. I will post his website at the bottom of our blog. Our favorite songs are Waterfall, Pachabel Meets U2, and All of Me. Savannah is crying, got to go....

The Day After Christmas 2007

Today is December 26, 2007. We had a wonderful Christmas and today the kids are playing with all their new toys. Jackson and Justin are on the Wii and Josh is on the Smart Cycle. When Josh was in the bathtub today, I noticed a big bruise on his ankle. He told me he got it from riding his Smart Cycle when his feet slip off the pedals. It hasn't seemed to slow him down. We had leftover cinnamon rolls for breakfast and I wonder if the kids will spend all day in their PJs again. Jackson and Justin got new scriptures for Christmas yesterday and when Jackson came into my room this morning, he told me he read his scriptures before he went to bed last night and he is going to keep reading them every night. That is the best Christmas gift he could ever give me.

We had an adventure on Christmas eve day. We took the whole family to Bass Pro Shop to spend Jason's gift certificate from the ladies at the office. We entered a drawing to win a Nintendo Wii and Jason won! The kids were so excited (they didn't know Santa was going to bring them one for Christmas). We got home and opened the box and the Wii was not there! Jason took it back to the store and the store managers had one more Wii package, but when they opened it, the Wii was not there! The store managers felt so bad, they gave us a $100 gift certificate and promised to get a Wii for us as soon as possible. Now we need to figure out what to do with 2 Wii's.
